How these numbers are worked out

Month. This month so far is compared with the whole of last month, so early in a month a drop is normal; read it as pace. The projection blends two guesses: the pace so far (sales ÷ share of the month gone, 21 of 31 days) and “so far plus what the rest of October sold last year”. Early in the month it leans on last year, because one load on the 1st would otherwise project thirty; by the last day it is just the actual.

Year-end. Calendar pace = sales so far ÷ share of the year gone. Last year’s shape = sales so far ÷ the share of last year’s total reached by this date; until last year had reached a tenth of its total, it is sales so far plus what last year sold over the rest of the year instead, because dividing by a tiny share is noise. Expected blends the two: it leans on last year’s shape early in the year and on calendar pace later.

One-off orders count in actual sales once and are left out of the stretching, so one big order doesn’t inflate the projection.

Average per tonne is revenue ÷ tonnes, including discounts and surcharges.
